Introduction

William Wolkovich-Valkavicius was born June 29, 1929 in Hudson, MA. to Liudvikas Steponas Wolkovich-Valkavicius and Elena Zukauskaite. He received his BA degree from St. John Seminary in 1953. He was awarded the Master of Arts degree from Boston College in 1980.  His pastoral assignments have included Lynn, Brockton, Needham, Cambridge, Dorchester, Marlboro, Ayer, Groton and Norwood.

 

Along with his pastoral duties, his other interests included ethnicity, immigration, and religion. He is a recipient of Order of Gediminas, Republic of Lithuania, 1997, and of Amicus Poloniae, Polish American Historical Association, 2001. He is the author of some 13 books including his major work Lithuanian Religious Life in America, 3 vols., 1986, 1992, 1998.  He had also written book reviews and essays. His memberships included  American Catholic Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Institute for Massachusetts Studies, Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences, and the Lithuanian Institute. In March 2004, Fr. Wolkovich received an honorary doctorate from the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.
