We all have to do it. What style do you pick? Where can you get help? How do the library databases make it easier? What happens when you don't cite your sources?

Your professors tell you too

Where to get help

How do you cite a book?  What about an article from one of the library databases?  What about Wikipedia?  These links will help you figure it out.  To find an example of a less common resource like a pamphlet or email, check out the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers at the Reserves Desk.  The call number is: Ref. LB2369.G53 1999.
  • Humanities: Documenting Sources

Diana Hacker is well known for her books that help students write papers. Her guide for documenting sources for CSE is the best on the web. This will help you with the most common types of sources.
  • Citing Wikipedia

If you really, really, really, really, really insist on using Wikipedia even when your professors say not too, at least cite it properly.
  • WorldCat

Search WorldCat for the books you are using. You can easily copy and paste the citation into your paper for the major styles. It will probably save you at least 5 minutes per citation.
  • RefWorks

Let the internet manage your citations! Use free RefWorks accounts to make sure your citations are correct.
