Reading A Call Number

Reading a Call Number :

DS
559.44
.S57
1992

The first two lines describe the subject of the book.

Call Numbers can begin with one, two, or three letters.

The letters refer to the general subject: DS = History of Asia

These are followed by numbers, which refer to the specific subject matter: DS559.44 = Vietnamese Conflict

These two lines will also help you determine what floor your book will be on. General Collection items that start will the call numbers A, B, C or D will be on the 3rd floor of the library. All other books in the General Collection will be on the 4th floor. If the first line of the call number says REF, it will be on the first floor of the library.

The third line often represents the author's last name: S = Smith

The last line represents the date of publication: 1992
